Heavy Rain Lashes Hyderabad, Portion Of Charminar’s Minaret Collapses; More Shower To Batter City

The heavy downpour took a toll on Hyderabad’s iconic Charminar, as a small stucco piece from the second level of one of its minarets collapsed due to the relentless rain.

Heavy rains battered Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana on Thursday, bringing relief from the scorching heat but also causing widespread disruption. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in the coming days.

Portion Of Charminar Minaret Collapses

The heavy downpour took a toll on Hyderabad’s iconic Charminar, as a small stucco piece from the second level of one of its minarets collapsed due to the relentless rain.

Inspector of Charminar Police Station confirmed the incident, stating, as per PTI, “It's not significant damage."

He also added that no casualties were reported.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said that the collapsed section was a decorative stucco element and not a structural part of the monument. The fragile material and prolonged exposure to the elements contributed to the minor damage, they added.

Officials assured that the incident was not of major significance, but as a precaution, a team of engineers and experts will assess the structure on Friday morning to determine necessary restoration measures.

The Charminar, a symbol of Hyderabad, was built in 1591 by Sultan Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah and remains one of India’s most recognized historical landmarks.

Citywide Disruptions

The intense pre-monsoon showers wreaked havoc in many parts of Hyderabad, leading to severe waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic jams across major roads, fallen trees and power outages in some localities

According to the IMD-Hyderabad, heavy rainfall is expected across all districts of Telangana, including Hyderabad, till April 6. The thunderstorm warnings remain in effect, and both day and night temperatures are predicted to drop significantly after weeks of above-normal heat.
