Heavy Rain Lashes Guwahati Day After Temperature Records Break In Assam, Arunachal; Yellow Alert Issued
Guwahati in Assam was lashed by heavy rainfall on July 14, day after several places in the state sizzled with record-breaking temperatures. IMD has forecast more rain in the upcoming days.
Guwahati on Monday was lashed by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms as the India Meteorological Department issued a five-day weather alert in Assam and other northeastern states for moderate to heavy rainfall. This comes a day after the northeastern region sizzled on Sunday with Mazba in Assam and Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh breaking all previous record of maximum temperature in July. Even Guwahati levelled its previous highest maximum temperature this month.

As per the lastest IMD forecast, several places across Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram are expected to receive moderate rain, with light to moderate showers likely at isolated locations in Tripura in the coming days.
"Thunderstorm and lightning accompanied with heavy rain very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam," IMD's bulletin for the state noted.
A yellow alert has been issued by the IMD with a forecast of thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rain very likely at isolated places for Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara, Kamrup Rural, Kamrup Metro, Karbi Anglong, and Golaghat on July 14.
A similar alert has been issued for Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup Rural, Kamrup Metro, Darrang, Morigaon, Nagaon, and West Karbi Anglong on July 15.
An advisory issued by IMD has called for increased public awareness and limiting commute in water logging prone low lying areas.
Assam, Arunachal Witness Record-Breaking Temp
In Arunachal Pradesh, the capital city of Itanagar recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degree Celsius, exceeding its earlier July peak of 38.8 degree Celsius, which had been observed on July 19, 2018. Meanwhile, Mazbat in lower Assam marked the region’s highest temperature at 39.9 degree Celsius, breaking the previous record of 38.4 degree Celsius set on July 6, 1984.
Several other locations sweltered in the July sun on Sunday. Dibrugarh and North Lakhimpur both logged maximum temperatures of 38.5 degree Celsius. Meanwhile, in Guwahati, mercury climbed to 38.4 degree Celsius, equalling its previous record from July 18, 2017.
The most significant deviation from average temperature was observed in Passighat, Arunachal Pradesh, where the difference from the normal reached 7.6 degree Celsius. Several districts in Assam reported temperature departures of over 5 degree Celsius above normal.
"Departure in maximum temperature is unusually high in several parts of the northeast due to below normal rainfall and decrease in cloud coverage," IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre head KN Mohan said.
Until the recent change in weather, several parts of Assam had been experiencing a dearth of rainfall, which was directly impacting paddy transplantation for almost one week. This had also lead to cancellation of holiday plans for many families.
According to Met department's forecast, the maximum temperature on Monday was likely to be above the normal by 3 to 5 degrees over some parts of Assam. In Guwahati and surrounding areas, the maximum and minimum temperatures were forecast to hover around 36 degree Celsius and 27 degree Celsius, respectively.
