Gunshots Fired, Property Dealer’s Car Torched In Delhi; Told To ‘Return Rs 30 Lakh Or Stop...’

In New Delhi, bike-borne assailants opened fire outside a property dealer's office and set his car ablaze in an attempt to recover Rs 30 lakh owed to them.

New Delhi, Apr 5 (PTI) Some bike-borne assailants opened fire outside a property dealer's office in east Delhi's Mayur Vihar area on Saturday and set his car on fire, police said.

According to police, the attackers were allegedly trying to threaten the property dealer, Sanjay Tosh, to recover Rs 30 lakh they claimed he owed them. Tosh was at home when the incident took place in Mayur Vihar's Trilokpuri area, he said.

"An eye-witness, Md Zaid, told police that seven to eight people arrived at the spot on three two-wheelers. Three of them stopped in front of the car, broke its windows with stones, and later set it ablaze using petrol," he said.

The officer added that when Zaid tried to intervene, two shots were fired at him and more were fired in the air. No one was injured in the incident.

"A PCR call was received at 3.45 pm regarding a car being set on fire. A team reached the spot and found that a white car was set on fire and its glasses were broken," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Vineet Kumar said.

Six empty shells, stones, a petrol-filled bottle and a matchbox were also recovered from the scene, he said.

Police also recovered a note from the site mentioning Tosh's name and photograph. The message read, "Sanjay Tosh, either return my Rs 30 lakh or shut down the gambling business. Give me the money I won, or stop the gambling business at your house." CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined to identify the attackers and establish the sequence of events.

A case under sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 326(f) (using fire or explosives to harm any property), 125 (endangering life), 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and of the Arms Act has been registered at Mayur Vihar Police Station, and efforts are on to nab the culprits, he added.
