On The Run For 13 Yrs: Delhi Man Arrested For 2010 Murder Over Cousin's Relationship

Rajeev, wanted for a 2010 murder over a cousin’s affair, was nabbed in Delhi after 13 years on the run. He had escaped bail, fled to Nepal, and lived under a fake identity in Bengaluru.

New Delhi, Jun 19 (PTI) A 45-year-old man has been arrested who had been on the run for 13 years after allegedly kidnapping and then killing a man in north Delhi's Burari area over a relationship with his cousin sister, police said on Thursday.

The accused, Rajeev, a resident of Prem Nagar, had been absconding since 2013 after jumping interim bail and had been changing his identity and location to evade arrest, they said.

According to police, Rajeev was arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder of 22-year-old Sunil Kumar.

"The case was registered on January 4, 2010, following a missing complaint filed by the victim's father on December 27, 2009. Later, body of Sunil was recovered from Ghaziabad," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Harsh Indora said in a statement.

The officer further said that Rajeev, along with his associates Lakhan and his father Rameshwar Dyal, murdered Sunil over a love affair between him and Rajeev's cousin. Following the murder, the trio allegedly dumped the body in a village. All three were initially arrested and sent to judicial custody.

While the other two remained in jail, Rajeev was granted interim bail in February 2013 on humanitarian grounds after the death of his mother. He, however, failed to surrender later, the DCP said.

He was subsequently declared a proclaimed offender by a local court in September 2013.

Police said that Rajeev was tracked to Bengaluru where he was living under a false identity as Bobby and working as a driver.

"We received a tip-off that he would visit his house in Prem Nagar on June 18. A raid was conducted, and the accused was apprehended. During interrogation, Rajeev reportedly admitted to fleeing to Nepal after securing bail and staying there for several months before relocating to Bengaluru. He worked various jobs under different names to conceal his identity," said the DCP.

Police said Rajeev was illiterate and previously worked as a property dealer in Delhi. Further investigation is underway.
