Residents in several parts of Chennai are advised to prepare for a scheduled five-hour power shutdown on Wednesday, June 11, as maintenance work by the electricity board is set to disrupt supply from 9 AM to 2 PM. The anticipated outage, while pre-announced, is likely to cause significant discomfort given the prevailing high summer temperatures.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a maximum temperature ranging between 37-38°C for Chennai with the minimum around 26-27°C. The IMD also noted the possibility of "Thunderstorm & lightning with Light/Moderate rain" in some areas, which could offer some respite, though it doesn't mitigate the impact of the scheduled power cut.

Ways To Beat Heat During Power Shutdown
With the mercury climbing, residents are encouraged to seek out alternatives to beat the heat during the power lull. Shopping malls emerge as a primary solution, offering comfort due to their robust generator backups. Popular options include Phoenix Marketcity, Express Avenue Mall, and VR Chennai, where visitors can enjoy movies, dining, or simply window shop.
Larger retail stores with generator facilities can also provide temporary relief, allowing for both shopping and a cool escape. For those seeking a quieter environment, the Public Library in Kottupuram is highlighted as a potential haven where comfort meets knowledge, provided it maintains power backup.
Additionally, the Chennai Metro Rail offers a fully air-conditioned commute, presenting an option for both travel and a break from the heat. Various large cafes and restaurants across the city may also have generators, providing a place to relax, enjoy a meal, and escape boredom. Residents are advised to verify the operational status of AC and power backup with individual establishments before planning their visit.
