The incident took place on August 12-13, 2024 when two four-year-old girls studying in the pre-primary classes of a prominent co-ed school in Badlapur were allegedly sexually assaulted by a 23-year-old male cleaning staff member inside a girls’ toilet.
The accused in the case was identified as Akshay Shinde. He was arrested by the police on August 17 for the incident that took place in Badlapur town in Maharashtra’s Thane district.
On Tuesday, massive protests erupted at Railway Station against the alleged sexual assault incident. During the protests, local trains at the railway station were stopped as protestors chanted slogans demanding justice.
Shinde was sent to police custody till August 24. He used to have domestic issues with his first wife and was remarried four months ago. Akshay Shinde, who worked as a cleaning staff at a school in Badlapur. His neighbour said his second wife had not been around for many days and he lived with his mother and brother, according to India Today.
Shinde had remarried four months ago while his first wife had left him due to his habits and domestic issues. "The (second) marriage happened around four months back. His first wife had left him due to his habits and domestic issues between them. Also, the second wife hadn't been seen for the past few days in the area," the neighbour reportedly said.
The neighbour further said that the whole locality was in shock and ashamed of him. "No one had imagined that such a monster was living here amongst us in this locality," the neighbour said. He claimed that Akshay Shinde had been living in the area for the past five years and he had stayed in a different locality.

Badlapur Sex Abuse Case LIVE: After Backing Thackeray, Sharad Pawar Now Urges To Withdraw 'Bandh'
Requesting to withdraw the Maharashtra bandh scheduled for August 24, NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar tweeted: "In the wake of the Badlapur incident, a statewide public shutdown was called for on 24 August 2024...This was an attempt to draw the government's attention to this matter. This bandh was within the purview of the Fundamental Rights of the Constitution of India. However, the Bombay High Court has ruled that the bandh is unconstitutional. Urgent appeal to the Supreme Court is not possible due to the time limit. As the Indian Judiciary is a constitutional institution, it is requested to withdraw tomorrow's bandh while respecting the Constitution."

Ahead of the 'Maharashtra Bandh' movement tomorrow, Congress spokesperson and media coordinator Shri Sureshchandra Rajhans has been issued a notice by the police. According to sources, several other leaders, officials, and activists in Mumbai have been served notices by the local police station.
