Tuhin Kanta Pandey Assumes Charge As SEBI Chairman For 3 Years

Tuhin Kanta Pandey officially took charge as the 11th chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Saturday. Pandey, a seasoned bureaucrat who was serving as Finance Secretary until recently, was appointed to the role by the government on Thursday.
He succeeds Madhabi Puri Buch, whose three-year term concluded on Friday. Buch, who is reportedly unwell, was absent when Pandey arrived.
Pandey’s tenure as SEBI chairman is set for three years.
Dressed in a dark blue blazer and striped shirt, Pandey arrived at Sebi's headquarters in the Bandra Kurla Complex business district on Saturday afternoon, where he was greeted by all four Sebi whole-time members: Ashwani Bhatia, Amarjeet Singh, Ananth Narayan, and Kamlesh Varshney, reported PTI.

About Tuhin Kanta Pandey
Tuhin Kanta Pandey, a 1987 batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre, holds a Master of Arts in Economics from Punjab University, Chandigarh, and an MBA from the UK. He has had a distinguished career, holding prominent positions both in the government of Odisha and the government of India.
Pandey’s early career saw him serve as the executive director and managing director of the Odisha State Finance Corporation (OSFC) and the Odisha Small Industries Corporation (OSIC). He later became the collector and district magistrate of Sambalpur and also worked as deputy secretary in the Department of Commerce at the Government of India, during which he was deputed to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Regional Office.
Upon his return to Odisha, Pandey took on key roles, including special secretary in the General Administration Department, transport commissioner, health secretary, and commissioner of commercial taxes. In 2009, he was appointed joint secretary in the Planning Commission, where he worked for five years before serving another two years as joint secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat.
Pandey is also well-known for his tenure as secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM). In January 2023, Pandey took charge of the Revenue Department following his predecessor Sanjay Malhotra’s appointment as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor. In this role, he played a vital role in framing the 2025-26 Budget, which included a Rs 1 lakh crore tax relief for the middle class.
