Stock Market Holiday: As Diwali approaches, investors may wonder about upcoming stock market closures. Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE will remain open as usual this week on Wednesday, October 30, and Thursday, October 31, 2024, operating between 9:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
On Friday, November 1, 2024, markets will close in observance of Lakshmi Poojan. However, a special one-hour muhurat trading session will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., marking the start of Samvat 2081, the Hindu new year. This symbolic session is considered auspicious, with many investors believing that investments made during this period bring long-term wealth and prosperity.
The following day, Saturday, November 2, is a regular weekend closure and also coincides with the Diwali-Balipratipada celebration.

The muhurat trading session on November 1 will include a special pre-open session from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., specifically for companies undergoing IPOs. Settlements will proceed on a T+1 basis. While this session traditionally brings volatility, it has historically provided positive returns, drawing investors looking to capitalise on the auspicious timing.
Stock Market Holidays for 2024
Diwali (Laxmi Pujan): A special trading session, known as Muhurat trading, will be held on November 1, 2024, to mark the auspicious occasion of Diwali and Laxmi Pujan.
Gurunanak Jayanti: The market will be closed on November 15, 2024, in observance of Gurunanak Jayanti.
Christmas: The stock market will remain closed on December 25, 2024, for Christmas celebrations.
Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain shut for both the sessions on Wednesday, (October 2).
On Wednesday, India's benchmark equity indices, BSE Sensex and Nifty50, opened lower tracking mixed global cues. At the opening bell, the BSE Sensex had declined by 154 points to 80,215, while the NSE Nifty50 was down by 71 points at 24,396.
