GST Collections Soar To Rs 22 Lakh Crore In FY25, Doubling In Just 5 Years: Data

Since its inception on July 1, 2017, GST has grown significantly in reach. The number of registered taxpayers under the GST regime has jumped from 65 lakh in 2017 to over 1.51 crore in 2025

India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue saw a significant surge, doubling over the last five years to touch a historic high of Rs 22.08 lakh crore in the financial year 2024–25, according to official data released Monday. The total gross GST revenue collected in FY25 represents a 9.4 per cent increase from the Rs 20.18 lakh crore collected in FY24. In comparison, FY23 saw collections of Rs 18.08 lakh crore, while FY22 posted Rs 11.37 lakh crore. The consistent upward trajectory underscores the robustness of India’s indirect tax framework since the introduction of GST.

A government statement marking the eighth anniversary of the GST rollout highlighted its transformative impact: “Since its rollout, the Goods and Services Tax has shown strong growth in revenue collection and tax base expansion. It has steadily strengthened India's fiscal position and made indirect taxation more efficient and transparent.”

Monthly Averages On The Rise

The average monthly GST collection in FY25 stood at Rs 1.84 lakh crore, compared to Rs 1.68 lakh crore in FY24 and Rs 1.51 lakh crore in FY22. Back in FY22, the average hovered around Rs 95,000 crore, less than half of the FY25 monthly average. Notably, April 2025 alone saw a record monthly collection of Rs 2.37 lakh crore, followed by Rs 2.01 lakh crore in May. Data for June is expected on Tuesday.

Growing Taxpayer Base And Simplified Structure

Since its inception on July 1, 2017, GST has grown significantly in reach. The number of registered taxpayers under the GST regime has jumped from 65 lakh in 2017 to over 1.51 crore in 2025. Designed to unify and streamline India’s tax system, GST replaced approximately 17 state and central taxes and 13 cesses with a five-tier structure, simplifying compliance for businesses and improving transparency. As GST marks its eighth anniversary, the record figures reflect the evolving maturity of the system and its role in reinforcing India’s fiscal foundation.
