Fuel price hike: After a continuous hike from past 13 days, no rise in petrol and diesel prices were observed on Wednesday. Fuel prices in the country have kept on surging to a relentless level since September 5 on a daily basis which has created a havoc among the consumers. As per statistics, petrol prices have witnessed a massive hike across the country and in the national capital it has climbed up to 15.4 per cent since the start of this year. Likewise, diesel prices too have seen a stiff jump of 22 per cent since the start of this year.
On Tuesday, petrol prices climbed to a new high with rates increasing by 10 paise in both New Delhi and Mumbai. In Delhi, petrol is being sold at Rs 82.16 per litre and Rs 89.54 per litre in Mumbai. Even Diesel prices registered a surge on Tuesday by gaining a hike of 9 paise to Rs 73.87 per litre in New Delhi and Rs 78.42 in Mumbai.
Fuel prices are lower in the national capital, followed by Kolkata where petrol is being sold at Rs 83.91 per litre and diesel rates have touched Rs 75.53 a litre. Even in Chennai, fuel prices have surged to new hieght over the past on week with petrol price soaring at Rs 85.31 per litre and a litre of diesel is being sold at Rs 78.
This unremitting hike in fuel prices across the country has questioned the international trade policy of the incumbent government and citizens want a quick intervention by the Centre. Even the opposition parties across the country have criticised the BJP-led government for not implementing stringent measures to curb the price hike.
However, Finance Minister Arun Jailtley believes that the ongoing hike in fuel prices is due to the global phenomena occurring owing to the squeeze on oil production and the US-China trade war. “These are impacts of a very significant ongoing global phenomena. You have at least three, if not more, indications of the nature of things which are happening globally,” PTI quoted Jaitley as saying.
