CCPA Slaps Rs 1 Lakh Fine On Flipkart For Selling Substandard Pressure Cookers

Flipkart has also been directed to notify consumers of all 598 pressure cookers sold on its platform, recall the pressure cookers and reimburse money to the consumers

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has slapped a penalty of Rs 1 lakh against e-commerce major Flipkart for allowing sale of pressure cookers in breach of mandatory standards, the PTI reported on Wednesday.

According to the report, a total of 598 pressure cookers sold through Flipkart did not conform to mandatory standards. The CCPA has also asked Flipkart to notify consumers that the products will be recalled and reimburse their payments besides submitting a compliance report in 45 days.

CCPA Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare said a penalty of Rs 1,00,000 has been imposed on Flipkart for allowing the sale of substandard pressure cookers on its e-commerce platform and violating the rights of consumers.

Flipkart has also been directed to notify consumers of all 598 pressure cookers sold on its platform, recall the pressure cookers and reimburse money to the consumers, she said.

The company has also been asked to submit a compliance report of the same within 45 days, she added.

This is not the only time CCPA has fined an e-commerce firm for selling pressure cookers without mandatory standards. It also passed an order against Amazon for allowing the sale of domestic pressure cookers in violation to mandatory standards on August 4.

Earlier, Amazon was also directed to pay a penalty of Rs 1 lakh. A total 2,265 pressure cookers sold via Amazon did not conform to mandatory standards.

The CCPA order read, “Amazon also directed to pay penalty of Rs 1 lakh for allowing sale of pressure cookers in violation to QCO (Quality Control Order) and violating the rights of consumers.”

Earlier this month, Nidhi Khare passed an order against US e-commerce major Amazon for allowing sale of domestic pressure cookers, in violation of mandatory standards, on its e-commerce platform.
