Prof. Tarun Kumar Thakur: A Visionary In Environmental Science And National Research Leadership

Prof. Tarun Kumar Thakur, a dynamic and accomplished academician, is a Young Professor at the Department of Environmental Science, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (A Central University), Madhya Pradesh, India. With an illustrious career spanning nearly two decades, Prof. Thakur has emerged as a trailblazer in the fields of riverine ecosystems, carbon neutrality in forestry, restoration ecology, landscape ecology, environmental health assessment, soil and water pollution, and phytoremediation. He earned his Ph.D. in 2006 from Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, India, laying the foundation for a prolific career characterized by groundbreaking research, practical expertise, and an unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability. His academic achievements include publishing over 115 high-impact research and review articles in internationally reputed journals, editing special issues for leading publishers such as MDPI, Springer ESPR, Frontiers, and Wiley, and completing 11 government-funded projects supported by esteemed organizations like DST, MOEFCC, MPCST, and the MP State Biodiversity Board.
In recognition of his exemplary contributions, Prof. Thakur has been honored with fellowships from NCST, NESA, TWAS, and DST, and he is an honorary member of the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM). His visionary approach and impactful research earned him prestigious recognition on India’s Republic Day (26th January, 2025) for outstanding accomplishments in obtaining patents and advancing research at his university.
