Expert Speak: How Agnipath Scheme Is Equipping The Youth Through Training

In an era of rapid technological advancement and evolving global dynamics, nations continuously seek innovative ways to strengthen their national human capital and societal fabric. The military is one critical area, and one such initiative is the Agnipath Scheme, designed to create a more educated, youthful and adaptable generation of individuals prepared to serve the nation and its society. Like in many nations every citizen has a duty to serve the nation, here too the participation has to be from the sense of service and not from a sense of entitlement.

This scheme promises benefits that have to be a whole of nation approach spread across the public and private sector as also Centre and State. Offering a chance to more citizens to have an exposure in the military would bridge the gap between military and civilian life. It also provides significant rewards and opportunities for participating individuals, including a decent financial package, valuable skill development, and option for entrepreneurial ventures.

Energising the workforce attitude and age profile: One of the standout features of the Agnipath Scheme is its focus on bringing in younger aspiring individuals who have to keep striving for retention on merit. By recruiting a fresh generation of physically and mentally agile youth adaptable to technology, the scheme aims to inject an attitudinal shift to strive for excellence from the initial stages in their career, rather than feeling assured of a permanent career and developing an attitude of entitlement for the rest of the career. These selected youth are shaped to tackle modern-day challenges. Every year, the armed forces will be infused with more than 50,000 young soldiers, progressing bringing down the average age profile from 32 to 26 years.

Keeping up with technology: Adaptability is key in today's world, where technology advances at breakneck speed. The Agnipath Scheme excels by providing participants with relevant training in contemporary technologies, methods, and training aids like simulators. This ensures that they keep pace with technological trends and are equipped to innovate in their future roles.

Broadening service opportunities: The Agnipath Scheme opens the door to national service for many citizens, democratising the opportunity to contribute to society. This inclusive approach means more people gain valuable experience and skills, enhancing their personal and professional growth while benefiting the nation. Many youngsters wish to join the military to serve their country without getting permanent residency in the military. They may want to serve for a short time, and thereafter get on with their family profession, pick up a job closer home, pursue higher studies with their own savings, or move to greener pastures abroad. The scheme provides an excellent opportunity for such individuals. Most of these individuals while continuing in society give the nation a higher degree of collateral resilience for internal security.

Inculcating discipline and motivation: Discipline and motivation for society are at the core of the Agnipath Scheme. The scheme aims to produce a generation of committed and self-driven individuals by inculcating these values. This emphasis on a strong work ethic is crucial for military success as also for excelling in any professional field. A six-month rigorous training schedule consisting of physical activities and a relevant technologically driven training program of the Armed Forces, followed by 3 and a half years of on-the-job combat experience as Agniveers, will inculcate a sense of discipline, organised behaviour and a sense of responsible behaviour in a large segment of the Indian youth. This young, disciplined, and aspiring workforce will be an asset to the nation.

Boosting armed forces' effectiveness: Injecting lower age profile energy into the armed forces is set to significantly boost operational effectiveness. The scheme promises to bring new outlooks and approaches to military operations. Desire to excel and lower age profile led professionally has the potential to deliver good results.

Bridging armed forces and society: The Agnipath Scheme creates an essential vital link between the Armed Forces and civilian life. The civil and military streams have to synergise for effective nation-building. The well-trained, disciplined youth who complete the program will bring valuable skills to various sectors, adding value to the civil stream thus bringing more convergence of the military and civilian spheres in the nation.

Embracing diversity of youth and experience: Diversity is another cornerstone of the Agnipath Scheme. By integrating a mix of youthful perspectives and experienced insights, the scheme enriches the armed forces’ organisational culture and brings fresh approaches to problem-solving.

Attractive incentives: Participants in the Agnipath Scheme at the time of exiting the military receive benefits like the Sevanidhi package of more than ₹11 lakh, which if utilised prudently provides a robust financial foundation for their future. This decent package at a young age could support them as they transition into new roles. Moreover, the scheme offers skill development tailored for employment in both private and paramilitary sectors, enhancing employability opportunities. For those with entrepreneurial ambitions, the scheme is suitable, providing resources and support to help them start their own businesses and support innovation.
