Vivah Panchami 2023: Why Weddings Are Not Held On This Day? Know Reason

According to religious beliefs, it was on this auspicious day that the marriage of Goddess Sita and Lord Rama took place in Mithila.

Vivah Panchami 2023: According to the Panchang, Vivah Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Margashirsha (Aghan). According to religious beliefs, it was on this auspicious day that the marriage of Goddess Sita and Lord Rama took place in Mithila. Therefore, people commemorate this day as the wedding anniversary or marital celebration of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. It is said that on this day, Tulsidas Ji completed the Ramcharitmanas.

On the day of Vivah Panchami, the marriage of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita is solemnised, and prayers and rituals are performed. It is believed that celebrating this day brings happiness to the home, and love in marital life flourishes. Astrology also suggests some remedies on Vivah Panchami, particularly aimed at addressing obstacles in the marriage of unmarried girls, ensuring their hands are sought in marriage.

Vivah Panchami 2023 Date:

This year, Vivah Panchami falls on Sunday, December 17, 2023. On this day, the wedding anniversary of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita will be celebrated. Especially in Ayodhya and Nepal, grand events are organized on this day, and people conduct celebrations commemorating the marriage of Rama and Sita.

In Hinduism, Vivah Panchami is considered an auspicious day. However, despite its auspicious nature, parents refrain from arranging marriages for their daughters on this day. Particularly in Mithila and Nepal, marriages are not organized on Vivah Panchami. This is because, despite the auspiciousness of the day, it is considered inauspicious to conduct marriages, owing to the challenging married life faced by Lord Rama and Goddess Sita after their wedding.

Why Marriages Are Not Conducted on Vivah Panchami:

Vivah Panchami is considered an auspicious day, and there are several auspicious moments on this day. However, despite this, parents do not arrange marriages for their daughters on this date. It is believed that even if the planetary positions are favorable and there are auspicious moments, marriages should not be conducted on Vivah Panchami. This is because, in Hinduism, the day is considered inauspicious for marriages due to the divine union of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita.

The legendary story of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita involves numerous challenges in their marital life. After their wedding, Lord Rama and Goddess Sita spent 14 years in exile, during which Goddess Sita was abducted by Ravana. Lord Rama had to rescue her, and upon her return, Goddess Sita had to undergo the Agni Pariksha (trial by fire) to prove her purity. Despite her innocence, she faced criticism, and eventually, Lord Rama abandoned her during her pregnancy, leading to the birth of their sons, Luv and Kush, in the forest.
