Pitru Paksha 2024: Garud Puran and other ancient scriptures extensively discuss the significance of ancestors (Pitras). It is believed that by performing Shradh during the 15-16 days of Shradh Paksha, one can bring peace, prosperity, and happiness to life by pleasing the ancestors.

While all days during Pitru Paksha are considered important, certain dates hold even greater significance for performing Shradh. One such day is the Panchami Tithi of Shradh Paksha, also known as Kunwara Panchami.

What Is Kunwara Panchami?

On Kunwara Panchami, Shradh is performed for those who either passed away on Panchami or died while unmarried. This day is dedicated to honouring the unmarried ancestors of the family who passed away before marriage. The day is referred to as Kunwara Panchami, as 'kunwara' signifies 'unmarried.' It is believed that by performing Shradh on this day, the souls of these ancestors attain peace, and their blessings remain with the family.

In 2024, Kunwara Panchami Shradh will be observed on 22nd September. The timings for the Panchami Tithi are as follows:

  • Panchami Tithi Begins: 21st September 2024, at 6:13 PM
  • Panchami Tithi Ends: 22nd September 2024, at 3:43 PM

The Auspicious Timings For Performing Shradh Are:

  • Kutup Muhurat: 11:49 AM - 12:38 PM
  • Rohin Muhurat: 12:38 PM - 1:26 PM

Kunwara Panchami Shradh Rituals

  • Begin the day by taking a bath early in the morning and cleaning the areas dedicated to the deities and ancestors using cow dung. Sprinkle the area with Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges).
  • Women of the house should prepare meals for the ancestors, including dishes like kheer, poori, and pumpkin curry.
  • The meal should be served on banana leaves or plates made from Mohwa tree leaves, which are easily available in the market.
  • Invite unmarried Brahmins or unmarried girls from the family, such as sisters and daughters, for a meal on this day.
  • During noon, perform the Shradh ritual in the name of the unmarried ancestors, and offer food to the fire (Agni) as part of the ceremony. After that, offer the food to birds and animals, known as the Panchbali Bhog, and then serve the Brahmin.
  • End the ceremony by giving donations to the Brahmins and respectfully bidding them farewell.

This day holds immense spiritual importance, and by following the rituals sincerely, it is believed that the ancestors’ souls will rest in peace, and their grace will continue to protect and bless the family.
