The ruling party had won 502 out of the 515 Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) seats and 5,998 out of the 7,219 Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) seats.

Chennai: The ruling Yuvajan Sramika Rythu (YSR) Congress party in Andhra Pradesh swept the local body elections with massive victory. The counting of the election took place on Sunday.

According to ANI, the ruling party had won 502 out of the 515 Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) seats and 5,998 out of the 7,219 Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) seats.

A report in Hindustan Times said that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) won only three ZPTCs and 675 MPTCs where Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its alliance Jana Sena won 23 and 85 seats in MPTCs respectively.

According to the report, the state has about 660 ZPTCs and 10,047 MPTCs, and of which 126 ZPTCs and 2,371 MPTCs posts were filled unanimously through election in March 2020. Pointing out that the election for the remaining seats was scheduled to take place in the last week of March 2020, the report said it was put on hold during the national lockdown imposed to contain Covid-19 pandemic.

The election process for the remaining seats resumed on April 2 and the election took place on April 8. The poll counting which was supposed to take place on April 10, was stalled by the Andhra Pradesh High Court after TDP and Jana Sena filed a petition expressing doubts in the election process. But the court on September 16 struck down the order and allowed the state election commission to go ahead with the counting, the report added.
