Assurances To Farmers Still Not Fulfilled, Govt Should Make A Law On MSP: Satya Pal Malik
"Farmers have only ended their dharna in Delhi but their movement is still alive," Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik said.
New Delhi: Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik has stated that the administration has yet to fulfil commitments made to farmers in December of last year, and has campaigned for a minimum support price (MSP) law, news agency PTI reported.
Malik expressed dissatisfaction with the current scenario, saying that farmers' dharna had only ceased at the Delhi borders, but their agitation against the three contentious agri-laws is still active elsewhere.
Speaking to the reporters on Sunday evening, Meghalaya Governor said, "Promises made by the government to farmers are not being fulfilled. The government should make a law on MSP to resolve the issues."
"Farmers have only ended their dharna in Delhi but their movement is still alive," he added.
In November 2020, thousands of farmers, largely from Punjab and Haryana, laid siege to Delhi's borders, demanding that the Centre repeal the three agricultural laws.
The protest was called off in December 2021 after the Narendra Modi administration repealed the agriculture legislation.
The protesting farmers had refused to evacuate the demonstration sites because they wanted the accusations filed against them dropped, legal guarantees on MSP, and compensation for the kin of farmers who died during the protest, among other things.
On December 9, last year, the Centre agreed to consider their additional requests, and the SKM announced the suspension of their protest.
Malik went on to say that there were no conversations about inflation or unemployment, and that the country's youth were roaming the streets without work.
Instead of discussing vital topics, the governor added, he implored Hindus and Muslims to quit fighting and instead focus on unemployment and other critical concerns confronting the country.
Concerning the usage of bulldozers in Uttar Pradesh, he stated that impoverished people's homes should not be demolished without giving them the time.
Malik also paid a visit to Baghra Dargah and spoke with representatives of the Rashtriya Lok Dal and the Samajwadi Party.
Malik had spoken in favour of farmers at the height of the farmers' protest, much to the government's discomfort.
In March, Malik stated that his friends encouraged him not to criticise the BJP administration because he may be appointed President or Vice President if he remained silent, but he stated that he is unconcerned about these positions.
