Kabul attack: US citizens among killed, confirms state dept

Washington D.C. [U.S.A.], Jan. 24 (ANI): The U.S. State Department has confirmed that multiple American citizens had been killed during a weekend siege at Kabul's Intercontinental Hotel.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, state department spokesperson Heather Nauert confirmed the news. However, she did not give any casualty figure.

The terrorists, on Saturday evening, stormed the hotel and started shooting at guests and detonating grenades.

The Intercontinental Hotel, located on a hilltop and heavily protected like most public buildings in Kabul, is one of two main luxury hotels in the city and was due to host an information technology conference on Sunday.

The United States also condemned the attack.

"Violence like this has no place in Afghanistan or anywhere else in the world," Nauert said.

In 2011, a similar attack on the hotel left at least 21 people dead, which also included nine attackers. The Taliban was also responsible for that attack as well.

The attack came just days after the US embassy in Kabul issued a warning about hotels in the city. (ANI)
