Mahinda Rajapaksa was elected Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in 2020, succeeding his brother, President Gotabaya. Another sibling, Basil, was appointed finance minister in 2021, strengthening the family's grip on power. Less than a year later, the country's most powerful political dynasty is in jeopardy, with protestors taking to the streets to demand something that would have been inconceivable before the economic crisis: the president's resignation.
