‘Start Crying, Works All the Time’: Reddit Users Share Hilarious Tricks To Get A Seat In Delhi Metro

Delhi Metro commuters on Reddit share hilarious and strategic ways to secure a seat, from faking a faint to reading body language. Check out the wildest hacks to grab a seat in the metro.

Commuting in the Delhi Metro during peak hours is no less than a battle, and finding a seat is often considered a rare victory. In a hilarious Reddit thread, users brainstormed some of the most creative, absurd, and strategic ways to secure a seat in a packed train.
The discussion began when a user on the r/Delhi subreddit asked, "Tips and tricks to secure a seat most of the time in a crowdy metro." The thread quickly gained traction, with fellow metro riders sharing their tried-and-tested (or purely imaginative) methods.

Fake It Till You Make It?

Some Reddit users suggested over-the-top antics to clear out seats. One user humorously suggested using emotional tactics, writing, "Start crying, works all the time." Others took it a step further, recommending pretending to faint or vomit to create space.

Mastering the Art of Strategy

While some responses leaned toward the dramatic, others provided a more calculated approach. One commuter recommended a counterintuitive trick: "When at interchanges, go in the opposite direction of where your destination is, at the next station deboard and take the right train.  A lot of people get off at interchanges so that's your golden opportunity!"

Another user shared their personal strategy of studying fellow passengers closely: "This is what I typically do. When I get on the train, I scan the crowds who are sitting. I stand in front of the one who’s not wearing earphones, headphones, etc. This means they are about to get down shortly. The ones who travel long distances usually wear earphones. And I scan their bags, usually the company's logo would be on the bag and I would know where the company is or a quick Google search. I will know where they are about to get down. And this is just my observation, ladies with the short handbags deboard the train sooner."

Reading Body Language for the Win

A few seasoned metro travelers emphasized the importance of reading body language. One user explained,
"As you enter, you need to take a quick glance of the seated audience and judge who will deboard early. I board from Rajeev Chowk (towards Ggn) and know that students will leave the train in the following stations and max till Hauz Khas. So you can go stand in front of them. Similarly, elderly folks and families usually deboard at AIIMS/Hauz Khas, so another good option."

The user further advised against standing in front of office-goers: "Conversely, if you see a person with an ID card or laptop bag, in all probability, they are gonna deboard in Ggn. So avoid standing in front of them coz you’ll never get a seat."

The Ultimate Metro Hack? Carry Your Own Chair!

For those who want to think outside the box, a few Reddit users jokingly suggested carrying a foldable chair from home. Others encouraged simply asking seated passengers about their stop, banking on the friendliness (or curiosity) of fellow commuters.
