Chinese Teenager Steals and Sells Mother’s Jewellery Worth Rs 1.16 Crore for Just Rs 680 to Buy Lip Studs
A teenage girl in Shanghai stole her mother's jewellery worth ₹1.16 crore, selling it for ₹680 to buy lip studs, sparking debates on parenting and teenage behavior.

In a bizarre and shocking turn of events, a teenage girl in Shanghai stole her mother’s high-value jewellery worth one million yuan (approximately ₹1.16 crore) and sold it for a mere 60 yuan (₹680), intending to buy lip studs and earrings, as reported by the South China Morning Post. The incident came to light when the girl's mother, surnamed Wang, filed a theft report with the Wanli police station of the Putuo Public Security Bureau. Wang discovered that her daughter, surnamed Li, had unknowingly sold precious items, including jade bracelets, necklaces, and gemstone pieces, mistakenly believing they were fake.
"I had no idea why she wanted to sell it," Wang told the police. "She said she needed money that day. When I asked how much, she told me ‘60 yuan.’ I asked why, and she said, ‘I saw someone with lip studs, and I thought they looked great. I wanted one too.’” Li explained that she was aiming to buy a lip stud costing 30 yuan (₹340) and a pair of earrings for the same amount, making the total 60 yuan.
The Chase of Police
Following the report, the police immediately launched an investigation. They reviewed surveillance footage and coordinated with market management. Their efforts led them to the jade recycling shop where the jewellery had been sold. With the help of the shop owner, the stolen items were successfully recovered. “The shop owner was out that day, so we contacted them by phone and arranged for them to come to the police station for further coordination,” said police officer Fan Gaojie. While the jewellery was returned to Wang, the case has sparked widespread debate online.
Some netizens questioned the parenting approach, especially given the family's wealth. "If the family owns a million-yuan worth of jewellery, why not give the child some pocket money?" one user remarked. Another added, “A teenage girl selling jewellery for 60 yuan to get lip studs is something parents need to reflect on.” On the other hand, others sided with the mother, expressing concerns over giving teenagers money for such discretionary spending. “Giving minors pocket money to get lip studs? As a college student, I cannot support that,” wrote one commenter.
“This whole situation is a mess, troubling for the shop owner, the police, and everyone involved. Adolescents need to communicate with their parents. Stealing from your family is still theft. This is a failure in parenting, not an excuse to blame teenage rebellion,” another remarked. The incident continues to fuel discussions about teenage behavior, the importance of open communication between parents and children, and the broader implications of modern parenting strategies.
