The government fired Superintendent Dr B. Srinivasa Rao and replaced him with Dr Chandrashekhar just hours after the tragic incident was reported.

The health department also suspended two doctors on duty when the incident occurred Thursday.

According to reports, P Srinivas, a goldsmith from Bheemaram in Hanumakonda, was admitted to the RICU for intensive care treatment on March 26 with kidney and liver-related ailments.

Srikanth, the patient's brother, came to see him on March 27 and discovered a pool of blood on his bed. He approached the medical personnel, who assured him that they would take appropriate steps. Srikanth entered the RICU on Thursday after obtaining authorization from the on-call doctors. He discovered blood on the bed and his brother unconscious.

He and other members of the patient's family hurried to the Superintendent's block. They compliained to hospital Superintendent Dr B Srinivasa Rao about the staff's neglect and how rodents had bitten off portions of flesh from the patient's legs.

District Additional Collector Srivastava, who received information about the incident, visited MGM Hospital to take stock of the matter.  An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

He spoke to Srinivas' family members and assured them of better treatment for the patient. He also directed the authorities to improve drainage and sanitation in the hospital.
