Waterlogging Due To Heavy Rains Paralyse Life In Telangana. Schools, Colleges Shut For Two Days

Incessant rains continued to lash Telangana for the third consecutive day on Thursday, leading to inundation of low-lying areas and crippling normal life. The continuous rainfall caused lakes and streams to overflow in certain districts, leading to the blockades in some places. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting more rains, authorities have issued an alert.

People residing in low-lying areas have been alerted and rescue teams have been kept on stand by. Waterlogged roads have disrupted vehicular traffic in Hyderabad. The state government has declared a two-day holiday for all educational institutions in the state on July 20 and 21.

Osmania University has declared a two-day holiday for colleges under its jurisdiction and postponed scheduled exams for July 20 and 21, IANS reported. Additionally, the water level in Godavari River crossed 41 feet at Bhadrachalam on Thursday.

Officials said a first warning would be issued if the water level reaches 43 feet. The Central Water Commission (CWC) officials have predicted that the water level was likely to rise further. The district administration has alerted residents living in low-lying areas along the Godavari river.

 The heavy rainfall has also impacted coal production in several mines of the state-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) in districts like Khammam, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad, and other districts.

In Siddipet district, water from an overflowing stream inundated the road at Basvapur, leading to the disruption of vehicular traffic. The incessant rains have also caused low-lying areas in Warangal district to be flooded, paralysing normal life in the region.

Chief Secretary Shanti Kumari conducted a meeting with top officials in Hyderabad to review the rain situation. She directed the officials to ensure all necessary measures are taken to prevent any loss of life.
