Hyderabad's Hussain Sagar Lake Overflows As Incessant Rainfall Pounds Telangana

The Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs, located on the outskirts of Hyderabad, are also receiving substantial inflows due to the continuous downpour.

Hyderabad's Hussain Sagar lake overflowed on Friday after reaching its Full Tank Level (FTL) of 514.75 meters due to incessant rainfall over the past four days. The authorities are closely monitoring the water level and discharge from the lake.

Telangana Minister T Srinivas Yadav reviewed the situation with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner Ronald Rose on Friday. Officials have been asked to alert people in low-lying areas near the discharge channels of Hussain Sagar. The lake has been receiving significant inflows from various stormwater drains due to the continuous rainfall.

Meanwhile, in view of the heavy rains, the state government declared two-day holiday for all government offices and educational institutions within the GHMC limits on Friday and Saturday. However, emergency services like medical and milk supply are continuing uninterrupted.

The torrential rain has severely affected normal life in the state capital. Inundation of low-lying areas was reported from various parts of the city and outskirts. The Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs, located on the outskirts of Hyderabad, are also receiving substantial inflows due to the continuous downpour.

Osman Sagar's water level stood at 1784.70 feet against its FTL of 1790, with 1,100 cusecs of water inflow. Similarly, Himayat Sagar's water level reached 1761.20 feet after receiving 1,200 cusecs of water against its FTL of 1763.50 feet.

The Godavari River crossed the first danger mark at Bhadrachalam on Thursday, reaching a water level of 44.3 feet, which is above the danger mark of 43 feet. The water level increased due to heavy rains in the catchment areas of the Godavari basin, leading to the river being in spate.

Authorities have issued alerts to people residing in low-lying areas along the river, as there is a threat of flooding. In July last year, Bhadrachalam had been marooned for the first time in 32 years after Godavari had crossed 70 feet mark, wreaking havoc in adjacent areas.
