SpiceJet is facing scrutiny over a slew of safety incidents in the recent past. Earlier in September, stating that the restrictions were extended as a matter of "abundant caution", aviation regulator DGCA ordered the budget carrier to operate only 50 per cent of departures till October 29, DGCA said in a statement.

"DGCA orders that the restriction on SpiceJet flight operations (50% of the approved Summer Schedule) as imposed on July 27, 2022, to continue till October 29, 2022, despite the appreciable reduction in safety incidents reported," the DGCA order read.

This year's summer schedule will ends on October 29, and the DGCA has approved 4,192 weekly domestic flights for SpiceJet. The airline has been reporting a number of technical malfunction incidents over the past few months.

Meanwhile, the budget carrier in September asked 80 of its pilots to go on a three-month leave without pay. The move is a temporary measure to rationalise cost, the Gurgaon-headquartered airline said. The pilots who have been forced to go on leave without pay are from the airline's Boeing and Bombardier fleets. A day after its decision of a temporary termination for these pilots, SpiceJet has now announced a 20 per cent salary hike for pilots.
