Prices of tomatoes have skyrocketed upwards to Rs 100 per kg in the Southern States
Hyderabad: Vegetable prices are skyrocketing. Especially the cost of tomatoes which is an essential vegetable is rising by the day. An acute shortage in supply of the crucial commodity has resulted in its price touching a new high.
The price of kilo tomatoes in the winter season is between Rs.20 and Rs.30. Recently, the cost of tomatoes has increased to Rs 100 across the southern states, including the Telugu states. In Hyderabad, the price of tomatoes per kilogram is Rs 120. The situation is similar in AP, where the tomato crop is high.
In Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, the price of a kilo of tomatoes has crossed Rs 140. In Bengaluru also tomato price reaches Rs 100 per kg. This is due to the crop damage while the recent incessant rains.
Meanwhile, Congress has taken a dig at the ruling BJP government saying 144 Section has been imposed in kitchens, as the vegetable prices soar.
Pawankhera pic.twitter.com/aKIIkQo1T6

Until the first week of November, the price of tomatoes per kilogram was only around Rs. 20. In other states, too, the price of tomatoes is between Rs 20 and Rs 40 per kg. However, in just 20 days, the tomato rate increased by Rs 100.
According to reports, the rise in the cost of tomatoes is due to heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu states. Rayalaseema, which has the highest tomato production in the country, has received heavy rainfall. AP cultivates 2.27 lakh tonnes of tomatoes in 43 lakh acres annually. Most of it is grown in Chittoor and Anantapur districts. The incessant rains, not only have damaged the tomato crop but also have cut off roads and bridges, making it impassable for the farmers to transport the yield.
