Sacked Or Not Sacked: Twitter's Email Leaves Employees In A Fix Amid Reports Of Mass Layoff

Twitter's new 'sole director' Musk aims to slash around 3,700 jobs at Twitter Inc in a bid to cut costs.

New Delhi: Twitter is abuzz ironically with posts about the mass layoffs set to take place at the microblogging platform after billionaire Elon Musk took over its reins.

The staff was informed about the layoff through an official email, as reported by The Guardian, New York Times, and Washington Post.

A Washington Post journalist who accessed the email has now posted it on Twitter and wrote: "Here's the first official communication from Twitter's new leadership to its staff, a week after Musk took over: a fun game where you get to find out if you're laid off or not based by 9am tomorrow, based on whether the email pops up in your Twitter account or personal account."

The email reads, "If your employment is not impacted, you will receive a notification via your Twitter email. If your employment is impacted, you will receive a notification with next steps via your personal email."

It was mentioned that Twitter offices will be temporarily shut and all badge access will be suspended in order “to help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data”.

"If you are in an office or on your way to an office, please return home," the email noted.

Reuters reported that the announcement of layoffs comes as Elon Musk completes a week of demanding deep cost cuts and imposing an aggressive new work ethic across the social media company.

The move triggered fear across Twitter Inc offices on Thursday as 7,500 employees fear losing their jobs as the planned exercise was to hit about half of the staff, reported Reuters.

Twitter did not say how many workers would be laid off, but the Washington Post and New York Times reported that about half of its employees will be let go.

Twitter's new 'sole director' Musk aims to slash around 3,700 jobs at Twitter Inc in a bid to cut costs, according to the Bloomberg News report. Musk has reportedly ordered Twitter to cut infrastructure costs by $1 billion, as per Reuters.
