PM Modi US Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi To Meet Elon Musk. Will Tesla India Factory Finally See Light Of Day?

Musk, who acquired Twitter in a hostile $44-billion takeover last year, started following PM Modi on the microblogging platform earlier this year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to kick off his four-day visit to the United States later today. In the buildup to that, news agency ANI has reported that PM Modi will meet with two dozen eminent personalities, including Nobel laureates, economists, artists, scientists, and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who has only recently started following PM Modi on Twitter. The meeting comes under the backdrop of longstanding talks of a Tesla electric vehicle manufacturing plant being set up in India.

Musk, who acquired Twitter in a hostile $44-billion takeover last year, started following PM Modi in April this year. It remains to be seen what Musk and the Prime Minister talk about when they meet in person.

Not The First Modi-Musk Meet

Back in 2015, Prime Minister Modi had a meeting with Musk during his visit to the Tesla factory located in San Jose, California, United States. At the time, India expressed a keen interest in exploring Tesla's solar Powerwall battery technology.

A Tesla Factory In India?

Elon Musk has been making efforts to establish his electric vehicle (EV) company, Tesla, in India for a considerable period. However, in May of the previous year, Musk stated that the company would not establish a manufacturing facility in India until it received permission to sell and service imported vehicles within the country.

Earlier that year, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, expressed a welcoming attitude towards Musk's potential establishment of an EV factory in India. He also mentioned that if Tesla intends to produce cars manufactured in China for the Indian market, it would not be a favourable proposal.

The minister had conveyed, "There is a simple solution: if Elon Musk is prepared to manufacture Teslas in India, there is no obstacle. We possess all the necessary capabilities, the suppliers are available, and we have access to various technologies, which would enable cost reduction."

PM Modi US Visit Itinerary

Between June 20 and June 24, Prime Minister Modi will embark on his first State trip to the US.

On June 22, US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will extend the honour of hosting Prime Minister Modi at a state dinner. Additionally, as part of the visit, the Prime Minister will have the opportunity to deliver a speech at a Joint Sitting of the US Congress and engage in meetings with various American politicians, distinguished individuals, and notable members of the diaspora community.

Furthermore, as part of his visit to New York, Prime Minister Modi has a scheduled meeting with a diverse group of approximately 24 individuals. This includes Nobel laureates, economists, artists, scientists, scholars, entrepreneurs, academicians, and experts from the health sector, among others, reported ANI.

Among the notable figures the Prime Minister will meet are Elon Musk, Neil deGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist; Falu (Falguni Shah), an Indian-American singer and Grammy award winner; Paul Romer; Nicholas Nassim Taleb; Ray Dalio; Jeff Smith; Michael Froman; Daniel Russel; Elbridge Colby; Dr Peter Agre; Dr Stephen Klasko; and Chandrika Tandon.
