Goodbye, Windows Key! Microsoft Introduces New AI Copilot Button On Keyboards

Microsoft's addition of the AI button will be the first major alteration to the keyboard layout since 1994.

Microsoft has introduced a new key on the Windows keyboard dedicated to activating its AI Copilot service, marking the first major alteration to the keyboard layout since the addition of the Windows/Start key in 1994. Positioned to the right of the space bar, the Copilot key is set to debut on devices available this month, emphasising Microsoft's commitment to artificial intelligence (AI).

At the CES technology conference, Microsoft's hardware partners will showcase Windows 11 computers featuring the Copilot button, with plans for it to become a mandatory feature over time.

This novel shortcut, designed to enhance user productivity, facilitates tasks such as image creation, email composition, and text summarisation through the integration of AI capabilities. Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's Chief Marketing Officer for consumers, expressed in a blog post announcing the change that AI would be seamlessly integrated into Windows, spanning from the system and silicon to the hardware.

Microsoft envisions 2024 as the "year of the AI PC," aligning with the trend among smartphone manufacturers labelling their latest models as "AI phones." Unlike standalone labels, Microsoft's approach involves a comprehensive transformation of its major products around AI technology, including Windows, Office, Bing search, security software, and customer and finance products. This initiative heavily relies on the GPT-4 technology from OpenAI, in which Microsoft has invested $13 billion.

Despite Microsoft's significant investment in AI services, device makers have not yet experienced a noticeable sales boost, as the innovative Copilot features are being introduced to both new and existing devices. Mehdi's commitment to weaving AI into hardware and silicon suggests potential increased pressure on consumers to upgrade as Microsoft continues to enhance and refine its AI offerings.
