Day After Resignations, Elon Musk Reveals New Policy On Hate Tweets, Lifts Ban On Some Accounts

Elon Musk announced Twitter’s new policy for account suspensions and restricting negative tweets saying hate tweets will be "deboosted".

New Delhi: Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk on Saturday revealed the microblogging platform's new policy pertaining to account suspensions and restricting negative tweets as he announced lifting the bans on some suspended accounts.

“New Twitter policy is freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach. Negative/hate tweets will be max deboosted & demonetized, so no ads or other revenue to Twitter. You won’t find the tweet unless you specifically seek it out, which is no different from rest of Internet,” he wrote.

Informing about the accounts being reinstated, he added: “Kathie Griffin, Jorden Peterson & Babylon Bee have been reinstated. Trump decision has not yet been made.”

“Note, this applies just to the individual tweet, not the whole account,” he further mentioned.

Comedian Kathy Griffin’s Twitter account was suspended for parody posts in which he impersonated the Tesla CEO.

Jordan Peterson’s Twitter account was banned in June after he tweeted about the gender transition procedure that actor Elliot Page underwent. Twitter suspended the account then for allegedly breaking its policy against discriminatory behaviour.

Babylon Bee, a satirical Christian news website, once claimed that former US president Donald Trump had done more for Christianity than Jesus Christ. The Twitter account was banned after it tweeted, “The Babylon Bee’s Man of the Year is Rachel Levine."

Rachel Levine, US Assistant Health Secretary Rachel Levine, a transgender woman, was the subject of the tweet.

As for Trump, his Twitter account was permanently suspended due to his tweets on election fraud in the US presidential election, allegations that continue to be unproven.

His allegations and tweets are blamed for the United States Capitol attack in January 2021.
