Samsung To Compete With Apple Vision Pro By Launching XR Headset By The End Of 2024, President TM Roh Confirms

Samsung has reportedly commissioned a higher resolution display for its mixed-reality headset, aiming to match the 4K resolution per eye akin to Apple Vision Pro.

Samsung is planning to give a competition to Apple's Vision Pro by launching a mixed reality headset gear known as the XR headset later this year. The President of Samsung's mobile division, TM Roh, in his endnote address at the Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris, France on Wednesday confirmed this news. Along with this news, Samsung also announced the Galaxy Z series foldable devices, Galaxy Buds 3 series wireless earphones, Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra, and Galaxy Ring.

Senior vice president of Google Platforms and Devices, Rick Osterloh, shared the stage with Samsung executives and said that the “XR platform” with Samsung is in the works. Osterloh said, “Looking forward, we're collaborating to bring next-generation experiences across Galaxy products from smartphones and wearables to even future technologies like the upcoming XR platform we've been working closely to develop in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm."

Samsung has reportedly commissioned a higher resolution display for its mixed-reality headset, aiming to match the 4K resolution per eye offered by Apple's similar device. Additionally, with the launch postponed to late 2024, Samsung has set a production target of 30,000 units for the current year.

During his closing remarks at the event, TM Roh, Samsung’s president of the Mobile Division, discussed the forthcoming mixed-reality platform. He stated, "A new XR platform is coming later this year." Although Roh did not provide a specific timeline for the launch of Samsung’s mixed-reality headset, his comments indicate that the product is likely in the final stages of development. This suggests that Samsung is making significant progress towards entering the competitive mixed-reality market, aligning with their strategic objectives.
