Claude Finds Its Voice: Anthropic Rolls Out Real-Time Voice Chat On Mobile. Top Features

With Voice Mode, Claude users can now conversationally talk to the AI, receiving responses in real time.

Anthropic is stepping into the AI voice chat arena, joining the ranks of OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, with the introduction of real-time voice capabilities for its Claude chatbot on iOS and Android. The feature, called Voice Mode, is launching in beta and will be available to users in the coming weeks.

Despite being a latecomer to voice-enabled AI, Claude’s new feature set offers some thoughtful touches designed to improve user experience.

Speak, Listen, Tap: A Smoother Chat Experience

With Voice Mode, Claude users can now conversationally talk to the AI, receiving responses in real time. Unlike some overly expressive or robotic-sounding assistants, Claude maintains a neutral, natural tone that strikes a balance between human-like and helpful.

The feature currently supports English and includes a live on-screen transcription of the conversation’s main points — an addition that could prove useful for multitaskers or accessibility purposes. Users can switch between voice and text inputs without disrupting the flow of conversation, making the experience feel more intuitive.

Easy Access, Simple Controls

Voice Mode is accessible via a new soundwave icon located next to the microphone in the Claude mobile app’s text field. Users can choose from multiple voice options before starting a session, providing a touch of personalisation.

Once active, the interface gives users control over their interaction. An up arrow submits the spoken query, a square icon can pause Claude’s response, and a plus sign opens the device’s media library or camera. Exiting the voice session is as simple as tapping the X button.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Anthropic showcased the feature and wrote, “You can have back-and-forth conversations with Claude and hear its responses in a natural-sounding voice.”

Free For All, But Perks For Premiums

While the base version of Voice Mode will be available to all mobile app users, Anthropic is keeping some advanced capabilities behind a paywall. Subscribers will enjoy enhanced features like voice-based interactions with Google Docs, Gmail, Calendar, and even the ability to search the web using voice commands.

Anthropic’s move into voice AI underscores the growing demand for multimodal interaction with chatbots. As users grow accustomed to seamless voice-first experiences, the bar for usability and personalisation continues to rise. Claude’s latest update may be arriving a bit later than the rest, but it could prove to be worth the wait for those seeking thoughtful design over flash.
