Schools, Experts Express Concern Over ChatGPT's Potential Negative Impact On Students

While some educators see ChatGPT as a tool, others argue that it is not reliable.

The use of conversational artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms has become a subject of controversy as Indian schools and experts expressed concerns about its potential negative impact on children's learning experiences. While ChatGPT, an AI tool that has been assisting individuals in writing poems, essays, and work papers, is viewed by some as amazing and fascinating, others argue that it is still in its early stages, and its ramifications are not fully understood.

Nikita Tomar Mann, Principal at Indraprastha Global School in Noida, suggests that schools should keep AI tools like ChatGPT at bay until their need and usefulness at the school level are better understood. Instead, children should be encouraged to conduct their own research, assimilate information, and construct their knowledge.

While some educators see ChatGPT as a tool for building critical thinking skills and asking good questions, others argue that it is not reliable and that children should not be denied using it because it is a technology of the future. However, there are concerns about the use of AI chatbots in general, including issues related to privacy and data protection.

OpenAI, the company that owns ChatGPT, has blocked access to its AI chatbot in Italy in response to an order from the local data protection authority. The authority claimed that OpenAI had unlawfully processed the data of Italian citizens in violation of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation.

In addition, a group of top entrepreneurs and AI researchers, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, has called for a pause in the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months. They argue that AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity.
