WATCH: Dams Overflow, Cities Waterlogged As Heavy Rains Lash Tamil Nadu

A flood alert has been issued for Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts in Tamil Nadu after heavy rains lash these districts

A flood alert has been issued for five districts -- Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts -- in Tamil Nadu after heavy rains lash these districts. 4,230 cubic feet of excess water was discharged from Vaigai Dam in Tamil Nadu's Theni. Also, dams in and around Coimbatore overflow after heavy rainfall lashed the city.

Severe waterlogging due to heavy rains caused a flood-like situation in Sirkazhi municipality of the Mayiladuthurai district. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier Saturday predicted fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over north coastal Tamil Nadu and ghat areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It also said there would be heavy rainfall over the remaining Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Lakshadweep.

As per Regional Meteorological Department's (Chennai) release, thunderstorm with modern rains is likely in Chennai. Meanwhile, in districts surrounding the capital city normal to heavy rainfall is likely, predicted the weather department.
