Visa Scam Case | Karti Chidambaram Has To Be Given 3-Day Notice Prior To Arrest: Court Tells CBI

Noting that Karti Chidambaram was currently abroad, the court also directed that he shall be joining the investigation within 16 hours after he reaches India.

New Delhi: A Delhi court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday to give a notice to Congress MP Karti Chidambaram three days in advance if it required to arrest him in connection with an alleged visa scam case. According to a report by news agency PTI, special Judge MK Nagpal passed the order while dismissing Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail petition as withdrawn.

The petition was opposed by the CBI, which said it was not maintainable at this stage. The central agency also added that it will give notice at least before 48 hours if Chidambaram was required to be arrested.

However, the court directed that in this case, if the CBI was required to arrest the accused, then he needed to be given notice prior to three working days.

Noting that Karti Chidambaram was currently abroad, the court also directed that he shall be joining the investigation within 16 hours after he reaches India.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested S. Bhaskar Raman, who was the first accused named in the case.

Bhaskar Raman, a close aid of Karti Chidambaram, was arrested in Chennai after being questioned by investigators of the CBI’s Economic Offences Wing in New Delhi.

It is to be noted that the central agency has accused Raman of accepting ₹50 lakh bribe for facilitating the re-use of Project Visas, for Chinese workers who were deployed in the construction of a 1980 MW thermal power plant, at Mansa in Punjab in 2011.
