Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday assured a fair probe into the alleged custodial death of a Tiruvannamalai man. After the death of Vignesh, the custodial death of Thangamani in Tiruvannamalai is the second death reported in the custody of police in Tamil Nadu in the past 10 days.

Talking about the custodial death in Assembly, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said, “On April 24, based on a tipoff that a man named Thangamani was possessing spurious liquor. The police arrested him, produced him before a magistrate and lodged him in the prison.”

“The next day he complained of having chest pain and was rushed to Tiruvannamalai GH. However, he died within an hour of reaching the hospital. On Thursday, the post-mortem was conducted before a magistrate. So once we get to know about the autopsy report, a fair probe will be conducted and it’ll be informed to the people,” he said.

The CM spoke about the death of Thangamani in the Assembly after AIADMK Coordinator O Panneerselvam issued a statement and said that there’s doubt over the death of Thangamani. O Panneerselvam also sought a CBI inquiry into the matter and told the government to announce an ex-gratia of Rs 50 lakh.

It all started a few days back when Thangamani from Thattaranai village in Tiruvannamalai district who was picked up by police for possessing spurious liquor died at Tiruvannamalai GH on Wednesday.

While the police said that they picked him up since he was reportedly possessing spurious liquor, the family members alleged that he was falsely picked up since he belonged to Kuravar, a Scheduled Tribe community.

The family members also alleged that the police told them to pay a bribe if they did not want Thangamani to be arrested. However, the family refused to provide a bribe.

The son of Thangamani, talking to The News Minute said, Thangamani's body was full of injuries and they were not even asked to provide consent for conducting postmortem.
