Covid Cluster: IIT-Madras Records 26 More Cases Taking Covid Tally To 171

IIT Madras Covid-19 Cluster: With 26 fresh Covid cases as of Thursday, the total tally of people infected with the virus on the campus goes up to 171

New Delhi: Amid Covid-19 fourth wave concerns, the number of IIT-Madras students being tested for Covid-19 has been on a rise. With 26 fresh Covid cases as of Thursday, the total tally of people infected with the virus on the campus goes up to 171.

Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan on Thursday told the media that the government is taking precautionary measures to contain the Covid cluster. "Today few more cases have been reported in IIT Madras. These all are part of our saturation test. Nothing to panic about. We've not closed the institution. We are ensuring that the cluster doesn't spread to other places," news agency ANI said, quoting Radhakrishnan.

As of Wednesday, the cluster tally according to PTI was 145 with 33 people testing positive for Covid. "The cumulative Test Positivity Rate of the cluster is around 2.9 per cent. We will continue to screen all the students and staff on the campus," Times of India said, quoting Radhakrishnan. "Most students have been isolated in the hostel rooms and quarters on campus. They have mild symptoms such as cough, cold and fever," a doctor attending to patients at IIT-M said, as quoted by ToI. 

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu reported 77 new cases on Wednesday while 34 patients got discharged. Across the state, there were 447 active cases. 298 Of the 447 active cases in the state were from Chennai. The adjoining three districts Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram combinedly added 73 active cases. While 10 districts reported Covid free, 22 districts had active cases between one and six and Coimbatore added 11 active cases to the total caseload of the state.
