Tamil Nadu: Wife Alleges Honour Killing As Man Commits 'Suicide', His Father And Brother Arrested

The police arrested Gowtham's father Annamalai (62) and brother Srinivasan (33) for abetting Gowtham's suicide

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Police on Tuesday arrested a father-son duo after a woman from Tiruvallur filed a complaint accusing them of killing her husband, Gowtham, due to inter-caste marriage.

Amul, the complainant, had married Gowtham in 2019 against his parent's wish. She recently have birth to a baby girl.

According to a report in Times of India, the police arrested Gowtham's father Annamalai (62) and brother Srinivasan (33) on Tuesday for abetting Gowtham's suicide.

On September 17, Gowtham received a call from his relatives who informed him about the death of his grandfather, the police said, adding that Gowtham went  to attend the funeral in Arani the same day.

After the funeral, according to the police, he asked money from his family members to clear a few loans. However, the family reportedly refused to give him any money, citing his inter-caste marriage as a reason following which Gowtham killed himself the same day.

Two days later, Amul, who did not receive any information about her husband, reportedly sent her brother to check on Gowtham. On reaching the village, the brother learnt about Gowtham's death on September 17 and informed Amul.

Amul then filed a complaint at the Arani police station as she grew suspicious of her husband's death. She said the family didn't inform her about the death, and she couldn't see her husband one last time. She also accused the family of caste killing since the couple belonged to different castes and married against Gowtham parents' wishes.

The police then started investigating the case and interrogated the family members as part of the police probe. The family said Gowtham killed himself and hence they had to cremate him on the same day. However, the family did not inform the police about the suicide or the cremation before the complaint was lodged. Annamalai and Srinivasan were, therefore, arrested.
