Tamil Nadu Police Arrest 2,500 History-Sheeters In 3-Day 'Operation Disarm' As Murders Cases Rise

The DGP also instructed the officials to conduct night patrolling and avoid untoward incidents in the future.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu special police team arrested overall 2,500 history-sheeters in the three days of "Operation Disarm" in the wake of increasing crimes in the state. The arrests made on the instructions of Tamil Nadu DGP Sylendra Babu also led to the seizure of 900 weapons including three firearms.

According to a report on IANS, the police team conducted raids on three days -- Friday, Saturday, and Sunday -- and nabbed 2,500 history-sheeters, especially from Dindigul and Tirunelveli districts due to several incidents of beheading in the past 12 days.

In his directive, DGP Sylendra Babu instructed the police officers at Madurai to investigate the murder cases that are pending for the past 10 years and told officials to conduct routine checks to keep track of the rowdies in the districts.

The DGP also asked the officials to conduct night patrolling and avoid untoward incidents in the future. The DGP had rushed to the southern district to review the situation.

The recent murders have made people opine that the scenario was similar to the caste crimes and revenge killing like that of the 1990s. They also recalled that the crimes were controlled after bus services were halted for 48 hours in the mid-1990s.

The recent murder reported in Dindigul was of one Nirmala Devi, who was hacked to death by over 8 accused. The police have arrested all 8 of them and sent them to judicial custody. It may be recalled that Nirmala Devi was also one of the accused in the murder of C Pasupathy Pandian, who was the founder of Devendrakula Vellalar Kootamaippu in 2012.
