Tamil Nadu: 3 Fishermen Injured In Attack By Sri Lankans Mid-Sea Near Kodiyakkarai
The Sri Lankan fishermen came near the Tamil Nadu fishermen in three boats and reportedly attacked them with iron rods.
Chennai: Three fishermen from Ramanathapuram were seriously injured in an alleged attack by a group of Sri Lankan fishermen mid-sea near Kodiyakkarai coast on Saturday. According to a report on PTI, a Coastal Security Group police said, the three fishermen from Arucottuthurai near Vedaranyam were attacked while they were fishing a few nautical miles southeast of Kodikkarai coast.
The Sri Lankan fishermen came near the Tamil Nadu fishermen in three boats and reportedly attacked them with iron rods. The Lankan fishers then snatched the catch, fishing nets, mobile phones and GPS equipment of the Indian fishermen before escaping from the spot.
The Tamil fishermen were identified as Sivakumar, Siva and his father Chinnathambi, as per a report on The Hindu.
The Tamil fishers managed to reach the shore with injuries and without any resources. They were all immediately admitted to Nagapattinam Government Hospital.

The Nagapattinam Collector Arun Thamburaj visited the hospital and enquired about the treatment given to the fishermen.
Even on Wednesday, the Sri Lankan Navy damaged at least 25 boats of Indian fishermen at Katchatheevu. The Sri Lankan Navy personnel reportedly came in 10 patrol boats and hurled glass bottles and stones at the boats and at Indian fishermen. The fishermen association also informed about the incident to Indian Coast Guard and Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department.
Similarly, in August 2021, 60 fishing boats belonging to Tamil Nadu fishermen were attacked by the Sri Lankan Navy in Katchatheevu island. However, none of the fishermen were injured. During all the incidents, the fishermen associations requested the state and union government to take stringent action against all the people involved in attacking the fishermen.
