Tamil Nadu MP M Selvaraj Passes Away At 67 After Battle With Illness

Selvaraj, who joined the CPI in 1975, dedicated himself to the socialist movement for nearly half a century.

Tamil Nadu MP M Selvaraj passed away due to complications from a kidney-related illness at a private hospital in Chennai on Monday. The Nagapattinam MP had previously undergone a kidney transplant surgery.

The 67-year-old MP from the Communist Party of India served in the lower house in 1989, 1996, 1998, and 2019. The four-time MP was also a farmer and a social worker. 

Taking to X, CPI (M) Puducherry said, "The CPI leader Tamil Nadu and Member of Parliament for Nagapattinam, Comrade M. Selvaraj, has passed away at the age of 67 after battling a prolonged illness. M.Selvaraj, served as the MP for Nagapattinam three times. Red salute you, comrade MS."

Selavaraj is survived by his wife, Kamalathanam. Having undergone a kidney transplant, he had been receiving treatment for the past few months. He refrained from contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections due to health concerns, as per a report on IANS.

 
 

In expressing condolences for his passing, CPI praised him as "an exemplary leader." The party announced that his final rites will be conducted in Sithamalli village, located in Thiruvarur district.

Selvaraj joined the CPI in 1975 and reportedly devoted himself to the socialist movement for nearly half a century. 

Recalling the contribution of Selvaraj, Tamil Nadu CM Stalin said, "Selvaraj has led many struggles for the needs of railway projects for the delta districts and for the rights of the agriculturists in the area."

"Selvaraj was personally affectionate towards me due to our ideologies and the fact that both of us are from the Delta region," he said.
