Tamil Nadu: IAF Lieutenant Arrested By Police For Allegedly Raping Officer In Coimbatore

The police have sent the Flight Lieutenant to judicial custody and he has lodged him in Udumalpet jail.

Chennai: A Flight Lieutenant at Indian Airforce College in Redfields, Coimbatore was arrested by the police for reportedly raping an officer at the campus. The woman officer reportedly took the issue to IAF authorities but they did not take any action.

Hence, she gave a complaint to the Coimbatore Commissioner following which an action has been initiated.  

On September 10, a 29-year-olf officer who was residing in the college facility got injured while playing a sport and she reportedly took medicines and went to sleep in her room. However, while she was asleep she experienced discomfort and as soon as she woke up in the night she was shocked to learn that she was sexually assaulted, said a report on The News Minute

Following this, the woman officer immediately gave a complaint to IAF authorities. However, they did not take any action. Hence, the officer filed a complaint with the Coimbatore Police Commissioner. The Commissioner then diverted the case to All Women's Police Station in Gandhipuram for investigation.

Based on the complaint, Flight Lieutenant Amrinder from Chhattisgarh was made to surrender but Amrinder's lawyer said that the Coimbatore police do not have any authority to conduct investigations against air force personnel and the trial should be held only at defense court. 

The police have registered a case under Section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Indian Penal Code. The police have sent the Flight Lieutenant to judicial custody and he has been lodged in Udumalpet jail.

In a similar incident, a 33-year-old Indian Air Force officer moved Jammu and Kashmir High Court in April 2021 accusing a colleague of sexual harassment. The complainant also alleged harassment during Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) proceedings.
