On January 19, a Class 12 student died by suicide in Thanjavur GH despite treatment. In her dying statement, she allegedly said that she was forced to do multiple works at the hostel.
However, the family members and BJP said that the girl killed herself under the pressure of converting to Christianity. The BJP made the allegation based on a purported video of the girl where she was seen telling that her parents were asked by the hostel authorities to permit them to convert the girl to the said religion.
Meanwhile, on the same day of the controversy, the Supreme Court permitted the CBI to probe the case of suicide. They also refused to intervene in the Madras HC order directing to hand over the case to CBI.
