In February 2021, the then Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K Palaniswami increased the retirement age of employees from 59 years to 60 years. In the Assembly, Palaniswami also said that the order will apply to all those who will retire on May 31, 2021.

The vacancy of retired persons also comes at a time when the state already has 1,50,000 vacancies to be filled in various departments. However, the government has not listed the vacancies but called for aspirants to attend TNPSC exams.

Overall, the state has only nine lakh employees as against the strength of 14-15 lakh employees. Some of the remaining vacancies should also be filled before December to avoid a burden on the workers.
