SC Issues Notice To ED On Senthil Balaji's Plea Challenging Madras HC Order Upholding His Arrest

Supreme Court posted the matter for hearing on July 26.

The Supreme Court issued notice to Enforcement Directorate on a plea filed by Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji and his wife challenging Madras High Court upholding his arrest on Friday. The Supreme Court then posted the case for hearing on July 26.

According to ANI, "Supreme Court issues notice to Enforcement Directorate on a plea filed by Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji and his wife challenging the Madras High Court order which held legal his arrest by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the money laundering case. Supreme Court posts the matter for hearing on July 26."

A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices P S Narasimha and Manoj Misra heard the case which was moved by Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji and his wife Megala.

On Thursday, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the DMK minister and his spouse said that the issue would become infructuous if not heard urgently.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the anti-money laundering probe agency, opposed the submissions for urgent hearing, contending that wrong facts have been narrated. He said that the Chief Justice of High Court is yet to refer the matter to a division bench for further proceedings.

Noting the arguments, the law officer as per PTI said, "If the bench seeks to list it tomorrow then I have no problem.”

“We will list it for hearing,” the bench said, as per PTI.

In a money laundering case, Tamil Nadu minister and his wife filed two separate petitions in the top court challenging the high court order which upheld ED's arrest of the Minister.

Minister Balaji still continues as a Minister without a portfolio in Tamil Nadu cabinet.
