NEET: 17-Yr-Old In Chennai Tries To Set Herself Ablaze Over Poor Exam Performance, In Critical Condition

The victim, a resident of Guduvanchery in Chennai, sustained 60% burns and was undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Chengalpattu. The girl is in critical condition, according to a report.

Chennai: A 17-year-old medical aspirant, who recently appeared for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) tried to set herself ablaze on Thursday. According to police, the girl attempted to end her life as she did not perform well in the examination. 

A report in the Times of India stated that the victim, who was a resident of Guduvanchery in Chennai, sustained 60 per cent burns and was undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Chengalpattu. According to their inputs, the girl is in critical condition. 

Quoting police officials, the report said that the victim was found isolating herself ever since she returned after taking the examination and she had set herself ablaze on Thursday when was alone at her house.

In the last week, as many as three medical aspirants had ended their life over the fear of failing in the NEET. While a 20-year-old man from Salem took his life on Sunday, two 17-year-old aspirants - one from Ariyalur district and the other from Katpadi in Vellore district - ended their lives on Monday and Wednesday respectively. 

Following the deaths, a report in IANS said that Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin is planning to approach the chief ministers of non-BJP states to abolish the examination.

Quoting sources in DMK, the report said that the chief minister is working to bring coordination between the chief ministers of non-BJP states to try and abolish the examination. The report said that he had already spoken to the chief minister of Kerala, Maharashtra, and West Bengal regarding the issue. 

The chief minister, according to the report, said in a high-level meeting that his government has been protesting against NEET but the union government continues to remain ‘cold-hearted’.
