Tamil Nadu: Food Safety Team Issues Notice To 5 Eateries In Madurai For Making Shawarma With Stale Chicken

In Kanchipuram, Food Safety Officers have sent the samples of a shop to a lab in Guindy to check the quality of the chicken used in the shawarma.

Chennai: Multiple teams of food safety officers on Thursday conducted raids at various shawarma shops across the state in the wake of the death of a student in Kerala due to food poisoning after consuming shawarma. The food safety team also raided the shops in Madurai where they seized 10 kg of stale chicken from five shops. 

According to ANI, Food Safety Officer Jayaram Pandian said, "A team of food safety officers raided various shawarma shops in Madurai district and seized 10 kg of stale chicken and issued notices to 5 shops."

In Kanchipuram, Food Safety officials under the chief Anuradha conducted raids at shops in places including Rangaswamy Kulam, Kavalan Gate, Keerai Mandapam, Kamatchi Amman Sanathi Road among others.

The officials imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 to 10 shops for packing the shawarma using unhygienic plastic products.

They have also sent the samples of a shop to a lab in Guindy to check the quality of the chicken used in the shawarma.

Meanwhile, the raids follow the death of a 16-year-old student due to food poisoning after consuming shawarma at Ideal Food Point in Neeleswaram of Kasargod. Around 49 other persons who also consumed shawarma at the same eatery were also hospitalised.

Following this, the police arrested three employees including the managing partner of the company on May 2. The owner of the outlet who lives in Dubai has also been called for an investigation.
