File Affidavit That You'll Not Drink Alcohol Anymore: Madras HC's Condition For Granting Bail

The two accused were arrested by the police for attacking their friend Suresh with a beer bottle under the influence of alcohol.

Chennai: News about tipplers committing murder, robberry or sexual harrasment has become like a norm everyday. The alcohol rehabilitation guide also shows several alcohol related crimes including homicide performed by alcoholics. In this backdrop, the Madurai bench of Madras High Court on Tuesday ruled that the Court will provide bail to two people only if they give an affidavit stating that they will not consume alcohol anymore.

According to a report on ABP Nadu, the Court gave the ruling while hearing a bail plea by Siva and Karthik of Trichy in connection with an attack on a friend under the influence of alcohol. The two members--Siva and Karthik--consumed alcohol with their friend Suresh. However, while they were drinking an argument between the two ensued resulting in the two attacking Suresh with a beer bottle. Following this, police registered a case.

However, the duo sought bail by claiming that the case registered by the police was false. On Tuesday, the case came up for hearing before Justice Pugazhendhi and he concluded that the issue took place because they consumed alcohol. Hence, the Court said that they will be given bail only if they file an affidavit stating that they will not drink alcohol. The Court then postponed the case to Monday for further hearing.

According to ABP report, while talking to psychotherapist and counsellor Raja Soundara Pandian, he said, many crimes are taking place under the influence of alcohol and it's a wrong notion that alcohol will give courage. However, alcohol only makes people lose their conscience and makes them do more wrongdoings.
