Covid Scare: Tamil Nadu Increases Vigilance, Conducts Random Screening Of 37 Passengers At Int'l Airport

According to State Health Minister Ma Subramanian, none of those checked exhibited Coronavirus symptoms.

Amidst sudden surge in Coronavirus cases in some parts of the world, the Tamil Nadu government on Saturday increased its vigilance. A total of 37 passengers who arrived at the international airport were screened for COVID-19, news agency PTI reported.

According to State Health Minister Ma Subramanian, none of those checked exhibited Coronavirus symptoms.

The passengers had come from Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Colombo, and Dhaka, and according to the Central Government's requirements, 2% of them were examined for the pandemic.

The Health Minister, who observed the 2% random screening at the airport here with Health Secretary P Senthil Kumar and Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine Dr T S Selvavinayagam, said that a bulk fever screening system has been launched at all state airports.

 

On Thursday Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin had directed officials to screen all passengers arriving in the State at the international airport.

"Tamil Nadu is prepared to tackle the pandemic. About 72,000 beds, out of 1.25 lakh available at the government hospitals across the state, have been readied for COVID-19 wards. Besides, we have three months' stock of medicines and an adequate supply of oxygen", the Health Minister was quoted by PTI in its report.

He had informed Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya about the steps Tamil Nadu has taking to prevent and control the spread of the virus during a virtual conference of state health ministers on Friday.
