Tamil Nadu Couple Gets Hitched In Flight Mode, DGCA Initiates Inquiry After Pics Go Viral

With 130 members aboard the flight, the couple claimed that everyone was allowed after their RT-PCR tests came out to be negative

Chennai: A couple from Tamil Nadu tried to make a true sense of a saying, "Marriages are made in heaven." Amid strict lockdown imposed in the state which was supposed to commence from Monday, a couple from Madurai has gone flight mode to tie the knot. Rakesh and Deekhana hired a chartered flight to get married en route to Thoothukudi from Madurai in their family and friends' presence on Sunday. 130 members were aboard the flight to witness the unique style of wedding.

Ahead of the complete lockdown which commenced Monday, the state government on Saturday and Sunday has given relaxations in curfew as the shops were allowed to open till 9 PM. Rakesh and Deekshana, who had got married a week ago in a private ceremony with no much celebration have utilised the curfew relaxation. The couple from Madurai came out with this out-of-box thinking to tie the knot while their friends and family members graced the event.

The members in the flight were allowed only after they have tested negative for Covid, claimed the couple. The Madurai Airport Directors said, "A SpiceJet chartered flight was booked Yesterday from Madurai. Airport Authority officials unaware of the mid-air marriage ceremony."

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) took note of the mid-air wedding and initiated investigations on it. Meanwhile, the SpiceJet crew, who accommodated the guests, bride, and groom were suspended. DGCA gave strict guidelines to the airline to lodge a complaint against those disrupting the lockdown.

After facing wrath from the aviation watchdog, SpiceJet clarifies that despite repeated requests and reminders to the passengers about Covid guidelines, they refused to follow the restrictions and the airline has taken appropriate actions as per rules.
